Functions of various treatment processes

1. Aeration: - Some iron oxidation, degassing of CO2, improvement of Dissolved oxygen.

2. Mixing Chlorine: - Biological control of organics/ Algae.

3. Mixing Alum/ Poly Aluminum Chloride :Coagulation

4. Flocculation: - Promotion of floc size.

5. Settling: - Removal of suspended matter and organics.

6. Rapid Gravity Sand filtration: - Final Clarification

7. Mixing Chlorine (post Chlorination): - Disinfection to prevent bacterial growth in reservoir & distribution network.

8. Sludge thickening: - Reduction of sludge volume

9. Sludge Dewatering (by centrifuges) Minimizing the sludge (truckable consistency)

Characteristics of Treated Water

The characteristics of the treated water (Combined Filtrate) shall generally confirm to the standards laid down by CPHEEO:

1. Turbidity < 0.4 NTU

2. Residual Aluminum < 0.1 Mg/l

3. pH - 7.0 to 8.0

4. Colour < 5 Pt/ Co Scale

5. Taste and odour : unobjectionable
